Sleepy Cottage Wakes Up, Jamesport, NY
OVERVIEW: Sited adjacent to a protected wetland with ever-changing views, we found this c. 1977 builder's cottage in Jamesport, NY, in sturdy condition but worn and lacking in personality.
Strategic design moves, on a tight budget, brought this little house back to life. The exterior design effort includes new Alaskan yellow cedar shake siding, new stucco, new windows, doors, steps and lighting fixtures. The rustic "summer camp" of a screened porch remains rustic but with new fixtures, windows and doors. At the interior, a large structural opening between the living room and kitchen makes for a lighter, more spacious feel and more flexible living space. The kitchen is new, as are other interior finishes. Millwork features Italian laminate patterns from the 1970's - same vintage as the house.
